With no further volcanic activity in the lower East Rift Zone for nearly a month, Hawaii County Civil Defense is reducing security measures in lower Puna.

On Friday, Civil Defense removed two checkpoints on Highway 137: One at Papaya Farms Road, north of the lava flow, and one at Opihikao, south of the lava flow.

Other checkpoints, however, will be maintained.

The checkpoint at the intersection of Highway 130 and Leilani Avenue will remain active, with access only permitted to residents, officials and other authorized personnel with placards. The checkpoint on Highway 132 in Nanawale also will remain active.

No changes have been made to the mandatory evacuation area in Leilani Estates. Civil Defense reminds residents that trespassers within the restricted area will be prosecuted.
